The second part of that may be to tell them what you want them to do and tell them you won't come out until they promise to do it. Why didn't I think of that when you guys were little.
Another great way is to get on the phone! I swear my kids have to have my TOTAL attention the second I try to make a call!
Just make sure you lock the door! I saw a sign in someo'ne's bathroon once that summed it up nicely...
"Be sure to lock, 'cause kids don't knock!"

oh my goodness this is so true!! However since we are still into the giving compliments for going potty, I usually get a standing ovation for going :)
